The Museum offers a world class collection of objects that span the history of western art from the fourth century BC through the twentieth century. The Museum’s founders, Louis and Charlotte Hyde, acquired the majority of objects during a fifty-year period of avid and highly informed collecting. Many of these works are displayed in their home, known as Hyde House, as well as select galleries in the education wing.

The permanent collection consists of approximately 2,800 paintings, sculpture, works on paper, furniture, and decorative arts. When the Hydes began collecting, their focus was not unlike that of their contemporaries. They acquired Old Master paintings, drawings and sculpture by such artists as Botticelli, El Greco, Raphael, Rembrandt, and Rubens. In their most important decisions, notable scholars William R. Valentiner and R. Langton Douglas often guided them.

After the death of her husband in 1934, Mrs. Hyde continued to acquire new works. In fact, approximately two-thirds of the core collection reflect her personal decisions and taste. It was also during this time that she decided to broaden the scope of the collection. To that end, she proceeded to purchase additional works by such modern masters as Cézanne, Degas, Picasso, Renoir, Seurat, and van Gogh. Concurrently, she assembled a significant group of works by important American artists including Eakins, Hassam, Homer, Peto, and Ryder.

While the majority of the objects comprising the permanent collection were the result of the efforts of Louis and Charlotte Hyde, the collection continues to grow through donations and acquisitions.

If one could survey the history of The Hyde Collection topographically, several high points would quickly present themselves. For example, our own “High Peaks” would most certainly include:

March 27, 1952 – Charlotte Hyde adopted the Trust Agreement that formalized her vision of the future Museum and established our mission;

November 3, 1963 –The Museum officially opened its doors to the public;

June 7, 1964 – David Smith: Sculpture and Drawings opened, becoming the first temporary exhibition held at the new Museum;

October 1, 1985 – The Hyde was awarded accreditation by the American Association of Museums, signaling a demonstrated commitment to the highest standards of professionalism; and

November 10, 1989 – The Education Wing was completed, transforming The Hyde Collection into a modern museum complex and fundamentally broadening the scope of our mission.

Individually, these events each clearly identified a new beginning. But of more importance, when viewed in series they underscore an evolving vision of the Museum and its ability to embrace a larger role within our community. On Saturday May 22, 2004 The Hyde commemorated another new beginning. After eighteen months of expansion, renovation, and restoration we celebrated the completion of the Comprehensive Plan. Along the way, we marked the establishment of a $400,000 endowment fund for conservation and the realization of a 6,600 square foot addition of capacity-building space.

Hyde House reopened embodying the finest combination of tradition and innovation. Outside, its exterior was completely restored. Inside, a historic Furnishing Plan was implemented and enhanced by new task and fiber optic lighting throughout the house. In addition, an updated, state-of-the-art security system and a new fire detection and suppression system were installed. Following years of research, months of execution, and extraordinary staff dedication and effort, we are thrilled to share our progress with all of you.

Certainly, this work has aimed at improving the visitor’s experience – artistically and educationally. But as we reintroduce ourselves to the Capital Region, we are hopeful that your experience will also include a sense of pride. The Hyde’s trustees and professional staff want you to be proud of your Museum, to view it as a responsive and responsible institution focused upon its mission, the stewardship of its collections, and the needs of a growing constituency. Ultimately, that is our goal and reason for being.

Individual Tours:
Docent-guided tours are offered for the Degas & Music exhibition on Thursday, Friday,  Saturday and Sunday at 2 and 3PM.

School Tours:

Group Tours: There is a charge of $6 per person for docent-led tours of historic Hyde House. For an additional $3 per person the Degas & Music exhibition may be included in your visit. From the South:
Take Exit 24 off NYS Thruway to I-87N. Travel north on I-87. Take Exit 18,turn right off the ramp, traveling east toward Glens Falls. Follow cultural attractions signs into downtown Glens Falls (you will also be following the blue hospital signs). Take Hudson Avenue and continue past the Glens Falls Hospital to the downtown intersectionof Rt. 9 & Rt. 32. — Proceedonto the traffic rotary following Rt. 32 . Get off the second exit of the traffic rotary (Rte 32 N), Warren Street.The Museum is located five blocks down on the right, just past the Armory building.

From the North:
Take I-87S to Exit 18 to Glens Falls. Proceed following directions abovehaving madea left turn off the ramp.

Fort William Lake George

Fort William Henry is a reconstruction of the site of the dramatic battle that took place in 1757, between the French troops, under Marquis de Montcalm, and the English who were defending the fortress under the command of Lt. Colonel George Monroe.  This is the fort that figured prominently in James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans.

Guided Tours:
Guided tours are conducted every hour on the hour with the last tour beginning at 5 pm.

Fort William Lake George

You will meet a guide dressed in 18th century military costume to begin your tour.  The guide will explain the weapons and warfare of the period including conducting live firing demonstrations of musket and cannon along with a musket ball molding demonstration.  Following your guided tour, a self guided tour will take you through the museum and its many exhibits.

Following each tour, children are invited to Join the Kings Army.
“Soldiers” are given a uniform, musket and a chance to drill with the guide.  After “firing” the musket, participants will be given a certificate signing them up as soldiers and a coin for payment.

Also located within the courtyard, you will find a Native American demonstrating crafts such as leather work and beading.  You are invited to participate and also to listen to stories of the significance of the crafts and of the Native peoples in the area.  Children can make their own necklaces at our beading table to take home as a souvenier of their visit.

Directions:
Fort William Henry is conveniently located on Route 9 just south of Lake George Village. From Interstate 87, take Exit 21 to the Village. The Fort is located on the north (right) side of the road. Parking is available near the Fort behind Bella Luna.

Buses and groups are welcome.

Sutler Shop:
After visiting the fort, stop by the Sutler Shop for a great selection of Fort William Henry and Lake George souvenirs, books, toys, candy, high quality replica muskets and cannon, clothing and unique gifts.  Located inside the fort, the Sutler Shop is open to the public (fort admission not required) 9:00am – 6:00pm daily, May – October.

Education Programs

Group Tours:

Fort William Henry provides school, scout and bus groups with an age appropriate tour of the Fort including the following:

• Short introductory film of the fort’s history
• Costumed guide meets yourgroup to begin the guided tour
• Musket loading and firing demonstration
• Cannon firing demonstration
• Musket ball molding demonstration
• Self guided tour of museum and exhibits
• On-site gift shop with souvenirs, books and gifts

A group is 15 people or more. Each group receives 2 complimentary admissions per group.

The LGET is a great way to expeirience the sights, sounds and history of the Lake George area.  The Educational Tour includes:

• Teacher information package sent before visit
• Short introductory film of the fort’s history
• Costumed guide to meet your group to begin the guided tour
• Musket loading and firing demonstration
• Cannon firing demonstration
• Seld guided tour of museum and exhibits
• 1 hour cruise on board the Mohican or Minnie-Ha-Ha of the Lake George Steamboat Company
• Snack bar open on board the Steamboat for lunch
• A complimentary beverage on board (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soda)
• Ice cream or candy treat after returning to shore
• Gift shop available with souvenirs, books and gifts

One free adult admission with every ten (10) paid student admissions.

• Fort Admission is valid all day, so you can come and go as you please.

Lake George hosts many events and does a great job at every one. Two favorites are Americade in June and the Adirondack Nationals in September. You just can’t beat walking around town seeing thousands of beautiful vehicles with the backdrop of the Adirondack Mountains and Lake George. The streets are filled with people having fun and there are plenty of restaurants and gift shops. Even if you don’t want to pay to get into the official event, the whole town is really an event, itself.

Americade is a week long event centered around the sport and beauty of motorcycles. This is not like Sturgis, so don’t worry about bringing the kids. Whether you sign up for the event and attend all the activities or just go for a day, it is impossible not be impressed with the number of bikes of all makes, models and eras. You’ll see riders who are the weekend warriors, the long time bikers and the newer crop of sport bikers. What is equally impressive is how friendly everyone is in the mix. Nighttime gets a little wilder but it’s always safe and you can just relax and have a great time.

The Adirondack Nationals is a similar event for classic cars. They come from all over and the quality of the restorations is unbelievable. People are friendly and you can learn or just look. You can talk to owners about technical things or draw out the stories of how they got the cars. Either aspect can bring tears to your eyes. And speaking of that, you’ll see some phenomenal paint jobs. You can just hear the cha-ching behind every one! Google Americade and Adirondack Nationals to get more info. If you have even ounce of “gearhead” in your blood, you will enjoy these events.
